It gives me great satisfaction to note some kick-ass knits in fashion (I gathered as much from tweets in Marie Claire SA’s twitter feed).
Though my specialty is toys, I love seeing the creativity and what can be done with knitting if you think out of the box.
Aside from the great mohair knits, I loved South African fashion designer Laduma Ngxokolo‘s MaXhosa Knitwear range. Laduma is quoted as saying in this blog, ‘My vision was to create a modern Xhosa-inspired knitwear collection that would be suitable for amakrwala, who are prescribed by tradition to dress up in new dignified formal clothing for six months after initiation.’ It’s lovely that there’s a cultural history behind his beautiful knits, but I think regardless of what the story is, he has a beautiful eye and has some stunning patterns out.
Despite the dreaded ‘jersey curse’ – allegedly, if you knit your man a jersey he will soon no longer be your man – I plan to knit El Boyfriendo a beautiful cabled cardi soon. But who knows, after this maybe I’ll try my hand at some Fair Isle knits…
